Hello, my name is Donovan Williams and <thisKidCanCode> ! When I was a student at Bishop Byrne High School in Memphis, TN I took a leap of faith and enrolled in an extra curricula program that offered computer programming training. The organization was Black Data Processing Associates. Mr. John Ruffin created the lessons and taught the classes. Additionally, there were a host of mentors and volunteers. We learned dressing for success, resume writing, presentation skills, interview skills, network topologies and of course computer programming with Visual Basic, SQL Server database, and Crystal Reports.
This training provided a phenomenal foundation for me as I pursued and obtained a Bachelors degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Tennessee at Martin. I didn't want to stop there, so I went on to earn a Masters degree in Management Information Systems from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ. Valued most at these institutions are a student's ability to think critically and creatively to solve complex problems. Developing a solution was just part of the requirements. The other part was presenting those solutions in class to professors and classmates. Both skills I developed early on under the leadership of John Ruffin.
Now a professional in the IT industry, I am progressing my way through the corporate ladder. I have won numerous top awards at my previous and current employers, Verizon and EMC. I have even lead meetings with Verizon's CEO and was recognized at the Board of Directors meeting.
I am a believer in helping others as the mentors in my life have helped me. I'm actively involved in my local community with non-profit organizations. Based on the possibilities that were presented due to John's vision, I completely believe in <thisKidCanCode>! I know that kids in the program will be set up for success, if they see it though!
